Not the same

Just yesterday @UncleCrappy reminded us all that July’s topic for NaBloPoMo is “Food.”  I’ve participated in a few of the topical experiments this year, and some were more successful than others.  But there’s something about the idea of writing about food all month that just makes me giddy, so this month I’m going to give it a go.  The posts likely won’t all be about food specifically, but will incorporate or dance around food in some way.  Who knows, maybe I’ll even post a secret recipe or two.  I don’t know that it would help even if I did, though.  There’s just something about the way certain people make certain dishes that just can’t be replicated by others with a recipe.  Some of my favorites:

Dad’s vegetable soup and tuna fish casserole.

Molly’s tortilla soup and Eddie’s “Cuci Sandwiches.”

Mom’s pizza and wedding soup.

“Pap’s” meatballs and from scratch spaghetti sauce.  (He once tried guiding me through making this over the phone when I was in Alabama.  Disaster.)

Gram’s chili.

And my late Grandmother’s Easter cookies, duck soup, rarebit, and her “Friday Spaghetti.”  (I have the recipes for most of these, but they wouldn’t be the same.  Especially not the duck soup… I’m not ready yet to bleed a duck and reduce the blood.  Even buying it to cook would be a stretch.)

What about you?
